This research library brings together scientific articles, systematic reviews, clinical studies and international research repositories relating to osteopathy and osteopathic practice.
The purpose of the library is to make osteopathy research easier to find and explore for patients, healthcare professionals, students, educators and researchers. Resources are organised by subject and type of evidence, with links to original publications and recognised research databases wherever possible.
Research in healthcare is continually developing. The inclusion of a study or resource does not necessarily indicate endorsement of all its conclusions, and individual studies should be interpreted in the context of their methodology, limitations and the wider body of evidence.

Research findings may be positive, negative, mixed or inconclusive. Inclusion does not mean that a treatment has been proven effective or is appropriate for every person.

Systematic reviews and evidence overviews
These publications provide broad assessments of osteopathy research or accessible introductions to osteopathic practice. Systematic reviews and evidence overviews examine findings from multiple studies, making them a more useful starting point than relying on a single clinical trial.
They do not provide a final answer for every condition or individual. Their conclusions still depend on the quality, consistency and limitations of the studies they include.

This paper examined systematic reviews of osteopathic manipulative treatment across a range of health presentations. The authors reported promising evidence for some musculoskeletal conditions, particularly non-specific low-back pain, neck pain and chronic non-cancer pain.
Research context
Evidence for paediatric conditions, headache and irritable bowel syndrome was limited or inconclusive. The review also identified methodological limitations affecting the certainty of some conclusions.

This review evaluated evidence concerning the effectiveness and safety of osteopathic treatment. It reported moderate-quality evidence for pain reduction or some functional improvement in acute neck pain, chronic non-specific low-back pain, pregnancy-related low-back pain and chronic non-cancer pain.
Research context
The review’s conclusions depend on the quality, consistency and comparability of the reviews and clinical trials it included.

As a recent publication, its findings should be considered alongside established reviews, the quality of the included studies and future independent appraisal.

This is a narrative review rather than a systematic assessment of effectiveness. Some of its conclusions should therefore be considered alongside higher-level systematic evidence.

This clinical review places osteopathic manipulation within contemporary chronic-pain management, with particular attention to persistent low-back and neck pain. It discusses possible effects on pain, function and quality of life, and considers osteopathic care as one component of a broader, multimodal treatment strategy.
Research context
As a narrative clinical review, it is useful for orientation and clinical context but does not provide the evidential certainty of a high-quality systematic review. Its conclusions should therefore be checked against condition-specific trials, meta-analyses and current clinical guidelines.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for nonspecific low-back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis reported clinically relevant reductions in pain and improvements in functional status following osteopathic manipulative treatment for acute and chronic non-specific low-back pain. The pooled findings were favourable, supporting possible benefit across several treatment approaches and follow-up periods.
Research context
This is a frequently cited favourable analysis focused specifically on osteopathic treatment. However, the authors called for larger, better-designed trials, and later reviews have produced more mixed conclusions, especially when active treatment is compared with credible sham procedures.
OSTEOPATHY FOR BACK PAIN
Effectiveness of osteopathic interventions in chronic nonspecific low-back pain

This review reported evidence favouring osteopathic interventions for reducing pain and improving functional status in chronic non-specific low-back pain. Among the approaches examined, myofascial release appeared to have comparatively stronger support for pain reduction, although results varied by technique, comparator and outcome measure.
Research context
Technique-level comparisons should be interpreted carefully due to relatively small evidence sets, clinical heterogeneity and variable trial quality. The findings support possible benefit but do not establish one osteopathic technique as consistently superior in routine practice.
